Act 1 of 2006 mandates communities to make certain decisions about local tax structure. Specifically, it requires that a referendum question be placed on the May 2007 primary ballot. If approved, the resulting tax structure would increase income taxes and possibly decrease homeowner property taxes.

Act 1 of 2006 requires that an independent tax study commission be formed from members representative of the Iroquois School District community. Such a study commission began its work on September 14, 2006, and must conclude its work with a recommendation to the School Board by December 13, 2006.

In addition to normal meeting comments, the tax commission is required to conduct a formal PUBLIC HEARING. At the hearing, an abbreviated analysis of options and impacts was presented and public input on desired options was solicited.  Iroquois' tax commission public hearing took place on November 29, 2006.
