About
the District . . . |
|
The
Iroquois School District is located in Erie County, Pennsylvania
and is the immediate school district east of the City
of Erie. Iroquois Junior/Senior High School is the only
high school within the Iroquois School District. In addition
to the high school, the District opened its brand new,
state-of-the-art elementary school, the new Iroquois Elementary
School, which opened its doors for the very first time
for the 2007/2008 school year. Iroquois Elementary School
(IES) educates children from Kindergarten through sixth
grade.
IES
is the result of the consolidation of two older district
school buildings, Wesleyville Elementary School (WES),
and Lawrence Park Elementary School (LPE). WES, located
in Wesleyville, housed the children from both communities
who were in grades K-3. LPE, once located in the Lawrence
Park Township, served all District children in grades
4-6. In June of 2007, the LPE building was completely
raised and its lot and the land next to it now hold the
new IES campus.
The
District administrative offices, which were previously
located within a wing of Lawrence Park Elementary, now
reside in their own home located on the southeast corner
of the new school building on Tyndall Avenue. Although
these new offices are located on the IES campus and share
one common wall with the school, a separate entrance and
parking lot allow the District Office to exist as a separate
entity for district-level and school board business. The
superintendent, business manager, personnel department,
business office, public relations office, curriculum directors'
office and the Iroquois School Board's boardroom can be
found at this location (800 Tyndall Avenue).
The
administration of the Iroquois School District is composed
of a superintendent, business manager, director of curriculum,
instruction and assessment, director of public relations,
an elementary principal, a high school principal, and
an assistant high school principal.
The
school district is composed of two adjoining communities,
both of which are suburban. Lawrence Park, one of the
adjoining communities, is a first class township with
a commission form of government and a population of approximately
4,310 citizens. Wesleyville, the second community composing
Iroquois School District, is a borough with an elected
mayor and town council and a population of approximately
3,655 people. The population is predominately middle
class with 16% of the residents being sixty-five years
or older.
Even
though geographically it is the second smallest school
district that comprises a Pennsylvania educational system,
the two communities that encompass the 2.3 square mile
Iroquois School District share an unusually large church
influence of all denominations. These churches all have
ecumenical services and have always opened their doors
for community activities. Both communities have many parks,
ball fields and playgrounds with separate regulating recreation
boards. The school is usually granted permission to use
facilities when so requested. Both communities have volunteer
fire departments with ambulance service and separate police
departments. Additionally, the Pennsylvania State Police,
Troop E, and the State Police Crime Laboratory are located
in Lawrence Park. |

Wesleyville
School was originally the school that was the
Wesleyville School District. It housed grades K-12. In
1966 the Wesleyville School District and the Lawrence
Park School District merged into the Iroquois School District.
Wesleyville School became Wesleyville Elementary School
which housed grades K-6. In 1985 Wesleyville Elementary
School became an all primary school, housing grades K-3,
until it was permanently closed by the District at the
conclusion of the 2006/2007 school year. |
| The
following was the grade configuration of Wesleyville Elementary
School in its final school year (2006/2007): 5 sessions
of traditional full-day kindergarten, 2 sessions of developmental
full-day kindergarten (KinderStep), 5 sessions of first
grade, 4 sessions of second grade, and 4 sessions of third
grade. There were a total of 380 students and 20 classroom
teachers at the school.
In
addition to 20 classroom teachers, 5 special subject teachers,
3 special education teachers, two Title I reading teachers
and one speech teacher, Wesleyville Elementary School
maintained a full-time custodial staff.
Wesleyville Elementary School had 5 cafeteria aides who
served the students and teachers lunch. The lunches were
brought over from Iroquois High School each morning. Lunches
are kept warm in ovens found in the school cafeteria's
kitchen. The food was then served to the students and
the staff from approximately 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each
day. |

Lawrence
Park Elementary School housed all of the students in grades

a computer laboratory, a large group instruction room
and a stage for concerts, performances, and classroom
activities. In addition it had a library, a gymnasium,
and an outdoor playground.
